Don’t get distracted by the shiny stuff

Dont get distracted by the shiny stuff_1536x1040

The start of a new year or new quarter is a great time to hit the "reset" button and refocus on your core business. We live in a busy world and it is very easy to get off track.  One goal I have this year is to stay focused on my vision and avoid chasing the "shiny stuff".

Sometimes the things that take us off track appear to be great things: creative ideas, business opportunities, new products, expanding markets, "good" advice, etc. In Gino Wickman's book Traction, he calls those distractions "shiny stuff".

Wickman says that a leader's responsibility is to establish your "core focus" and not let anything distract you from it. Pursuing new opportunities or ideas is not a bad thing - in fact it can be a great thing - but choose opportunities and ideas that align with your core focus.  "When your core focus is clear" Wickman states,  "you're going to come to several important realizations.  You'll realize that certain practices, people, and, sometimes, entire divisions and/or product lines don't fit into your core focus."

In commercial real estate, I see new opportunities all the time. I can't tell you how many times I’ve chased the shiny stuff and come out a loser.   Sometimes it was a client that didn't fit my "ideal client profile" and other times it was a listing that had "great potential".  I now work real hard to try to identify the fool’s gold before it’s too late.

If you don't have a core focus, define it.  If you have one, work it.  If you chase a new opportunity, make sure it aligns with your core focus and vision.  Remember, all that glitters is not gold.
