Mr. Butterworth joined Colliers International in 2021 and serves as managing director and head of urban leasing. He brings with him deep experience in tenant advisory for occupiers across a wide variety of industries.
Mr. Butterworth was an executive vice president and partner with CBRE/New England’s Urban Advisory & Transaction Services Team for 14 year specializing in tenant representation. Before CBRE, he spent four years as a senior vice president and partner at Colliers’ predecessor firm, Meredith & Grew, and another 4 years as managing director with Insignia/ESG.
With a 20+ year career in the real estate industry as a downtown leasing advisor, I think of myself as an “urbanphile”; one that loves the city and all that it offers. I enjoy nothing more than learning, working, and staying apprised of the ever-evolving Boston urban landscape and helping my clients navigate that landscape with skill and creativity. I have a strong appreciation for the relationships I have formed and continue to develop with my clients along the way. My drive, optimism and loyalty are defining qualities in a business that I find to be more an art than a science, requiring judgment and patience. My clients have achieved tremendous success with my assistance.
While I had early exposure with my parents running their own small real estate business, I began my personal real estate journey as an intern with Meredith & Grew – now Colliers International – and was subsequently offered a position in property management to commence immediately upon graduation from Boston College. In property management, I oversaw more than 50 properties and developed a strong understanding of the inner-workings of large urban buildings and portfolios. This experience gave me a thirst for more real estate knowledge and led me to a graduate program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where I earned a Masters of Science in Real Estate. Post-graduation, I returned to Meredith & Grew, transitioning to the brokerage advisory side of the business where I have remained ever since.
I revel in the fast-paced and challenging nature of the real estate industry and enjoy dissecting a client’s business, allowing me to help them solve problems and improve overall business strategy over time. Beyond my professional life, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, yoga, golf, traveling, reading, and devoting my time to several charitable organizations. Such organizations have greatly impacted me, both personally as well as professionally, especially when I have been able to offer meaningful real estate expertise that ultimately contributes to their overall success.
As a leasing broker with the urban team, I represent Boston landlords as well as a diverse group of tenants, most of which are actively trying to use their real estate as a vehicle to build their brand and attract talent. Working on either side of a real estate transaction, I strive to help create a clear vision of what our clients want and advise them accordingly as to how it can be achieved.
Prior to joining Colliers in 2016, I spent 4 years in property management at JLL, where I developed a strong foundation in building operations that has proven invaluable in my role today. I aim to be creative, energetic, and reliable with my clients and am dedicated to finding each of them the very best solution for their unique situation.
I enjoy the opportunities and challenges that come from working in one of the most active, yet most stable markets in the world, fed from a world class education pipeline. The competitive atmosphere and overall dynamics of the industry, combined with the collaborative team spirit at Colliers, all contribute to an exciting and supportive work environment where I plan to learn and grow in the years to come.
Outside of the office, I enjoy playing ice hockey, golfing, skiing (snow and water), and am an avid follower of all things Boston sports.
As a Senior Advisor with the urban team, I enjoy the constant challenge of advising tenants and landlords in making efficient real estate decisions in a dynamic and ever-changing environment. In a market where it’s an arm’s race for top talent, a tenant’s real estate is a catalyst for brand development and employee retention. I strive to guide clients through this process from start to finish with nothing but the best results.
I began my real estate career at WinnDevelopment where I focused on the acquisition and development of complex historic and LIHTC multi-family product. Most recently, I worked as a market research analyst at Newmark Knight Frank after performing a similar role at CoStar Portfolio Strategy, with both positions focused on analyzing the drivers and fundamentals of commercial real estate. With a passion to transition to the transaction side of the business and put my diverse background to work, real estate brokerage became a seamless next step.
I am drawn to the collaborative, team-oriented nature of brokerage where hard work and persistence pays off. My diligent and detail-oriented personality, coupled with my robust market knowledge, will offer tremendous value to clients seeking optimal real estate solutions. Outside of the office, you can find me on the ski slopes or on the water. I am an avid golfer and outdoor enthusiast who enjoys seeing live music and unwinding on weekends with close friends and family.
