Millennials in the workplace: what’s the first thing that comes to mind when you read this? That they won’t stay there for too long? It’s only natural: young people tend to be bolder, more adventurous. But young people are ambitious, too. Their focus on “going from zero to hero” and building up their careers is perhaps stronger than anyone else’s. There are many ways in which they can develop professionally, and many choose to do so by sticking to one of their first – if not actually their first – employers. At Colliers, we’ve witnessed such accomplishments over the years. Most of our seniors joined the team when the real estate market was only budding, and our professionals grew together with it. Young professionals in a young market, it seemed only fitting. Today, however, is not about them. Even after the Romanian real estate market matured, we continued to attract young talents and established a tradition of nurturing their potential and guide it on the road from good to great.
Today, we take pride in our new generation of Young People in Real Estate.
Meet Roxana, our 32-year-old Associate, LEED AP Interior Design + Construction and LEED AP Operations + Maintenance in the green certifications team. She joined Colliers in 2017 as Assistant in the Real Estate Management Services (REMS) department, two years later she joined the green certifications team and after only another two years of working directly with the team she acquired her first two international green accreditations.
This is an impressive achievement, especially considering that Roxana’s previous 6-years’ experience was in administration and digital marketing. But we’ve already learned from our other young professionals that some (career) changes are more than welcome from time to time. Now it’s time for Roxana’s version of change.
I heard about Colliers through a friend and after I did some research and found extensive media coverage, I forwarded my CV without a particular position in mind, but hopeful to learn more about the corporate real estate world. When the Colliers HR team reached out to me for an interview I gladly accepted and went through a series of interviews and tests before joining the team as Assistant in the Real Estate Management Services department.
As a graduate of Bucharest University of Economic Studies with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and with a master’s degree in Environmental Economics, Roxana fit the pattern of real estate employees, even though she would join the industry much later on. A few steps into our office and a deep exchange of ideas with some future colleagues proved that she was also a perfect match for the Colliers crew.
When I first walked into the Colliers office, I had my first glance at the colorful and joyful atmosphere that I was soon to discover is always present in the office. People passing greeted me with a warm smile, and the general office noise was filled with laughter and conversation, and the people seemed to enjoy being at the office. For me, that was a great sign and made me want to be a part of the team. My first impression after the interviews and after talking to some of my future colleagues was that at Colliers people take great pride in the work they do and by joining the REMS team, one of the biggest departments at Colliers with almost 30 people, I will have the best opportunity to have an introduction in the real estate world and learn from seniors in the field.
Before Colliers, Roxana’s main experience involved managing the marketing database, social media platforms, and advertising campaigns for a small local business. Her transition to real estate might sound unexpected to some, but the foundations were already there. Roxana choosing Colliers was not just by chance, a happy coincidence – it was a case of perfect timing, of finding the right context to put into practice her environmental studies.
My journey at Colliers begun with learning the basics of real estate and has transitioned naturally after almost two years to the Green and Healthy Building Certifications Division, part of REMS, which is closer to my university background in environmental and sustainability development in the entrepreneurial environment, and was my goal from the interview stage. Today, I am an Associate within the division and a LEED Accredited Professional for Interior Design and Construction specialty and for Operations and Maintenance specialty. One of the greatest challenges, as well as one of the most rewarding experiences I faced as an Associate in the Green and Healthy Building Certifications Division, was having a hands-on approach in the certification process by creating an accessible environment to fulfill the certification requirements and by being an efficient interface between the project team and the international certification body.
Roxana had a very fast professional development while in Colliers. As quick learner, a dedicated teammate and a rigorous professional, she found the perfect place in which to thrive. She’s been with the team for four years and she received all the support and recognition for her hard work: there are many reasons that made her stay for so long, but people remain the most important one.
I am happy to be at Colliers and, since first joining the team over four years ago, what kept my enthusiasm and joy of being here is that at Colliers we never forget to celebrate every milestone and every achievement. Also, continuous education is a strong component of the company’s culture, thus providing the best environment to grow and become a part of the best professionals in the real estate market. We take pride in being truly specialized professionals and we always strive to provide the best quality of services. At Colliers, I learned to be happy for my accomplishments and to be proud of them, I learned that if you set your goals and work hard, your efforts are rewarded, and I also learned that the best results come when you work with a team that has the same mindset and similar values. Today I am very different from the person that first got hired at Colliers. I believe the first years at Colliers will always be an important stage of my professional journey. I’ve learned to value the power of a great team and I’ve learned that true growth always starts with a sturdy foundation.
Few people discover their true passion and fewer have the courage to pursue it, especially later in life. Roxana was bold enough to do things differently; she wants her path to lead to a much greater goal, as she is aware of the meaning and importance of her work. We can only salute her drive and enthusiasm for sustainability services and we’re curious to see what changes she’ll be part of going further.
As I am very passionate about sustainability and health in the built environment, the path I have chosen towards a career in the corporate real estate is the perfect outlet to be a part of this movement in Romania. My favorite part of the job is that things constantly evolve in the sustainability field, it’s not a static job, as the field is in line with the global standards and best practices, I learn new things almost every day. For the foreseeable future, I see myself part of the real estate industry as the focus starts to shift towards making the global economy greener, more sustainable; the future and existing built environment will have to adhere more and more to sustainability practices for a healthier planet.
Seeing here rapid growth, we’d say that young people wishing to follow a similar career in real estate might have one or two things to learn from Roxana. And she has her own piece of advice to offer:
For young people considering a career in real estate, I think the best advice I can give them is to be curious, to ask questions and when they find a path that brings them joy, to set goals and to work hard towards reaching them, but always remembering to stop and celebrate every achievement.
We know for a fact that Roxana’s future is green. Next week, we’ll find out what color Mariana’s future is. Stay tuned!
