Creating rooftop habitats for bees to thrive

Since 2018, the UN has marked World Bee Day each year to boost awareness of the importance of bees and beekeeping. In addition to being crucial pollinators, bees are critical players in environmental conservation and climate change mitigation.

Colliers is transforming rooftops into pollinator gardens for honeybees in several countries. In Poland, we built beehives on the roofs of these managed buildings: Spark C and Zebra Tower in Warsaw, C200 in Gdańsk, and Dominikański in Wrocław. Our biggest effort in this area comes with partner Alvéole, an urban beekeeping company that has installed beehives on 19 buildings across North America. We have adopted 1.5 million honeybees that have pollinated 226 square miles of gardens. Our efforts resulted in the production of 900 pounds of honey (3,000 jars!) – which are then sold, with proceeds donated to local food banks.

Colliers is a leader in engaging with tenants, demonstrating how such collaborations can result in meaningful sustainability initiatives. More than 270 Colliers professionals and tenants were part of these efforts and online workshops on the importance of honeybees to our ecosystem were made available for tenants.
