My decision to return to Colliers was based on the firm's growth story and my personal ambition
Surabhi Gupta recently rejoined Colliers as the head of #officeservices for North India. After starting her career with Colliers in 2005, she has now returned to the organisation after a decade.
What prompted you to come back to Colliers?
If I may answer this with candour, the decision was based on a combination of the Colliers growth story and my personal ambition. While Colliers has always had a rock strong foundation, over the last 2 years the firm’s global growth story has taken a different shape, and the impact across APAC has being visible and gaining momentum. This opportunity came to me at a very interesting inflection point – both for me in my professional journey as well as the Colliers growth story, the latter being a very strong pull.
What is the key difference in the culture of Colliers now, vs. what you witnessed back then?
In my view there are two facets to culture – the DNA and what we make of it. The core #culture is still the same from over a decade ago, which is passion for clients and focus on employees. I am witnessing an interesting shift, and today’s culture stems from the platform as well as the confidence and collective energy of the dynamic team and strong brokerage practice. This amalgamation, I feel, is the secret sauce that defines our culture.
What are your plans on growing the Office Services business in North India?
We can expect more and better outcomes from the Office Services team by aligning on 3 key principles - Confidence, Focus and Service Delivery.
- The Colliers team I have come into is already very high on confidence having delivered some marquee deals over the last two years. We remain committed and poised to building a rock solid team, and nurturing our Superstars.
- When you are on a growth path, you are always competing with yourself and working towards achieving milestones you have set for yourself. A strong tenet of growth is focus, or rather moving forward sans distraction. Moving together as a team, delivering together as a team, achieving together as a team and rejoicing together as a team!!
- Service delivery par excellence – Client solutioning is changing as needs of Occupiers are evolving. Delivery models are also evolving, with increased attention to portfolio optimisation, flex solutioning, managed office etc. Our teams are ahead of the curve and are ever ready to provide bespoke and tailored advisory.
As a woman leader, how do you balance your professional commitments (being in a very dynamic broking business) & your personal commitments?
I feel very strongly that the relevance of this question was much higher nearly two decades ago when I started out. The culture that I have grown into and the culture that I have seen with respect to women leaders is one of strong professionalism and indominable spirit also I believe that personal commitments apply to all professionals and leaders alike. I feel I am blessed in this regard as I have been able to enlist help and support from family, friends and colleagues at various instances and as the job demands.
I would strongly urge all new entrants and future women leaders not to worry on this aspect and not to have any gender limiting beliefs. It is important to recognize the need for and reach out for help and support wherever needed, and that applies to all professionals as we accept new challenges!
