Employee Spotlight: Veronica Lukito

Employee Spotlight: Veronica Lukito Colliers Indonesia

How long have you been working in the real estate industry?

I started working in the real estate industry right after I completed my bachelor’s degree five years ago. So, working at Colliers is my first job.

How did you get started in this industry? What was the path that led you to where you are today?

I was already interested in joining this industry back when I was at university because FM at Colliers is related to my educational background, Urban Planning and Real Estate. When I was still at university, Colliers, especially FM service, had a collaboration with the university for a special class where Bu Christina and Bu Dyah taught about service. It drove my interest in FM and after that, I was really lucky to get an opportunity to join an internship with the FM team. I didn’t unintentionally enter this industry – I followed my passion to work here.

What do you like about the industry?

I like the dynamics of working in this industry. If you ask another colleague from management services, they might answer similarly. When we are working in management services, we are appointed to handle clients and all clients have different personalities or characteristics, running different businesses; and their business needs are also different from each other. I have gained a lot of new knowledge from all the clients, even though they have the same goals. That’s what I meant when I said I love the dynamics and that’s what excites me the most.

Who inspires you?

I really do get inspired by all the female leaders from our team. I know Bu Christina and Bu Dyah from back when I was at university, five to six years ago. I saw them as professional practitioners and their explanation about this industry is something that is real and not just theory. It inspired me to do the same.

When I really got into this industry, I saw how they approach clients, carry on projects and lead their teams – and I felt like I really wanted to be part of the company. I can say that my passion is doing what I am doing right now; and I’m going to dedicate myself to and grow my career on the FM team.

What has your greatest achievement been to date?

I feel like I have achieved a goal when a client acknowledges our work results. It means that we have delivered our target and they are satisfied with the services. There are times when some clients need improvements; however, other times, clients feel satisfied with the work – and that’s when I think we have reached our objective.
Another achievement is that, in the span of five years, I am quite satisfied with my career growth.

What advice would you give to someone starting and considering a role like yours?

“Persistence” – that’s a word that sums up everything. When we have a clear goal, we need to focus on doing what we can do to achieve that goal. I think that is the main thing that I do – step slowly but surely to the next level in my career. Even in my position, there are still a lot of people above me; and to be able to take the next step, I need to be persistent. Persistence will not only help me to get what my clients want, but also lead to good personal career growth.

Also, “honesty” – being honest is a basic character trait that everyone has to have to be able to survive in any industry.

If you were not working in this industry, what do you think you would be doing?

With my interests, I think I would be working in an educational institute, probably as a lecturer and teaching people. I really like formal learning and I still learn every day and try to educate people.

If one day I was offered an opportunity to do that, I would be really interested. I know even if I was working at Colliers, the opportunities are always there. We can see that Bu Christina and Bu Dyah, as well as some other leaders in other departments, are actively teaching.

What do you do when you're not at work?

Sometimes, we are also required to work on weekends at some sites. When I have time, I like to cook. I usually shop for food and cooking supplies. I barely do that on weekdays because I’m so busy with work and tired. However, when I have spare time, I do cook most of the time.
