Interning with Colliers - Mursal Mae Azadzoi

Hong Kong Blog 1536x1040

Mursal Mae Azadzoi, an ex-intern from Australia shares some of her experiences interning with the Marketing and Communications team in Colliers Hong Kong.

WHY DID I CHOOSE AN INTERNSHIP AT COLLIERS?

Why did I choose to undertake an internship in a multinational real-estate firm? I chose to do my placement at Colliers because I was aware of its dominating presence within the real estate market back home in Australia. And knew it would support my hunger for knowledge and growth within the industry. I particularly chose Colliers Hong Kong through a program in collaboration with the Australian Chambers, as I could not resist the inherent challenge that a global internship proposes.

WHAT DID MY JOB CONSIST OF?

As a Marcomms intern I was expected to act as a multifaceted employee that undertook tasks from the different managers in my team. And due to that I was able to gain knowledge and delve into different areas within Marketing. I had the opportunity to undertake internal and external communication projects, created media content, assisted in events managing and even had the chance to give my photography skills a try.

WHAT DID I GAIN FROM MY INTERNSHIP AND WHAT CHALLENGES DID I FACE?

I believe that I was able to gain an understanding for what is expected of me as a marketing professional. I had the freedom to explore my options, and by doing so I exercised my creativity and tested my proactiveness. I did have a bit of a hard time trying to figure out my worth within the already very busy team in the beginning. Overcoming that challenge eventually became my biggest gain. I obtained a sense of confidence that I couldn’t acquire before, and that was because of my considerate coworkers that nurtured my ideas and respected my working style.

WHAT WAS MY FAVORITE MEMORY AT COLLIERS?

I think that any time the entire team was together for a meeting was my favorite. Having everyone away from their ever-so demanding desktops (even if it was to discuss more work that needed to be done) was a small luxury that I learnt to cherish. It was a time in which we acknowledged each other’s hard work and cheered on those that seemed to have challenging projects ahead of them. The sense of belongingness within an unfamiliar company [and continent] was essential for me to survive as an intern.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO FUTURE INTERNS?

I would firstly acknowledge their initiative to jumpstart their career in such a commendable manner. And would encourage them to maintain that growth hungry mindset throughout the internship period. Because that is what is going to maximize their opportunities and will indicate to their coworkers that they’re willing to learn.

WHAT DID IT MEAN BEING AN INTERNATIONAL INTERN WORKING IN HONG KONG?

It is not easy living in a foreign region with a prominent language barrier and inevitable cultural differences. However, facing these obstacles and being able to overcome them meant that I would be able to exercise my resilience and adaptability skills. Whether or not I was going to learn a plethora of hard skills during this job, one thing was for certain. I knew that integrating myself within Hong Kong culture (corporate or otherwise) would mean that I would leave the region with new found transferrable skills that would serve me even outside of work.
