Midsummer Retail Report 2012

The latest Midsummer Retail Report is now available. Featuring the latest retail research, Midsummer Retail Report looks in-depth at all aspects of the retail property market, including high-street retail, out-of-town developments and the effects of the growth of online retail.

This report is a must-read for anyone in the retail industry, whether you are an occupier, owner or investor.

Synopsis

The continuing diificult economic climate is exaggerating significant structural changes which are taking place in consumer behaviour, which is having a profound impact on the high street.

The internet is most definitely benefitting from these changes, although it still makes up only 8% all UK retail sales. Other retail sectors benefitting from these changes in consumer behaviour are large city centres and major out of town malls, which provide a range of food and leisure offerings to consumers, in addition to their shops.

It appears to be small towns that are suffering the most from these changes and they are in dire need of genuine help from the government. It should be noted that this help needs to be far more sunstantial than their current commissioning of TV pundits and the availability of only a few hundred thousand pounds.

The North/South divide is continuing to grow even wider across all measures of retail health, be it shop rents or vacancy rates, and this needs to be addressed. Within the South, Central London is thriving as result of both tourism and the fact that the economy appears to be far more resilient within the capital.

"Retail sales will remain subdued as consumers prefer to save more and pay off their previously accumulated debts. Nevertheless, retailers situated in certain prime retail locations continue to trade well and demand remains robust in Central London from domestic and international operators."
