Melrose was built in 1880 as a Victorian gentleman's residence of significant charm and character. Indeed, its construction probably had an eye on the tourist trade, which was at the time beginning to increase, allowing many people to visit the delightful scenery of the Lake District, following the building of the railway to Windermere. Over the years, modem facilities have been sympathetically combined with the many original features to form a superbly appointed 8 bedroom guest house which is only minutes' walk from the centre of Ambleside. However, the most important feature was the adding of the attached 3 bedroom house, which gives the resident owners separate and particularly spacious accommodation, not normally found in other typically Lakeland guest houses.
