Meet our expert Damian Harrington

Q: How long have you been in the real estate industry and how did you come to join Colliers?

I started my real estate career in 1993 having qualified from University as a Chartered Town Planner. The first 12 years of my career were spent in London. My first role was in the student housing sector at the University of London. I could sense the vast growth potential of this niche sector, so I undertook a strategic analysis of the London student housing market which opened doors to new opportunities in the real estate sector. I was hired as an investment analyst at an independent research company, London Property/Residential Research, who are renowned for their depth of coverage of the London market. I worked on a variety of private and public sector projects ranging from shaping London’s planning, mixed-use and housing policy to site-specific development and investment appraisals. Concurrently, I completed my Masters (MSc) degree in European Property Development and Planning at the Bartlett School, UCL (where I subsequently became a visiting lecturer), renewing my interest in expanding my geographic horizons.

In 2005 I joined CBRE to lead their new research and consulting function for the Middle East and African markets out of Dubai. In 2006, I relocated to Prague where I led CBRE’s research team for Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), before joining Colliers in 2009 as Head of CEE Research based in Prague. My role at Colliers progressed as the company expanded, becoming Head of EMEA Research in 2015 whilst living in Helsinki, and later Head of Global Capital Markets Research in 2020 after relocating back to London in 2018. I joined Colliers because of the enterprising culture and the opportunity to build a regional research function from scratch, comprising of a robust data and analysis platform to help generate objective, forward-looking insights and consultancy to clients and colleagues.

Q: What is your current role at Colliers and how do you use your expertise to help clients?

I am a Director and Head of Research for both the EMEA region and our Global Capital Markets department. At an EMEA level I work with the heads of Capital Markets, Occupier Services and Property Management, providing insights to the teams and their key clients on an ongoing basis. This often results in providing presentations to clients and undertaking strategic location analysis to support their business development. Day to day I work closely with my own team of three analysts plus national heads of research discussing market conditions, challenges and opportunities enabling us to deliver insightful content. In my Global Capital Markets role, I regularly engage with the heads of research in the APAC and the Americas regions to produce global insights that cover various topics and sectors which our clients and colleagues can leverage. I believe our clients benefit from our ability to be objective, adaptable and trustworthy to support them with their business requirements.

Q: What excites you about being part of a global team?

I’m excited to be a part of the Global Capital Markets platform, as we have a genuine global reach at a very local level across all asset class types. As the company continues to grow, we can offer our clients even more insights into the markets and sectors they are most interested in. It is also exciting to be leading the development of our research platform globally, encompassing Colliers’ collaborative approach to support our cross-border clients no matter what part of the world they are investing in. One of the most engaging parts of my job is travelling and presenting to clients and colleagues around the world. This allows me to spend time in key markets and speak with clients and colleagues in person, whilst providing them with insights into global trends which they can utilise.
