Today the Government’s announcement that it is extending measures to prevent the eviction of high street tenants unable to pay their rent.
Responding to the announcement Mark Jarrett, Head of Property Management at Colliers International, who acts for a broad range of landlords, said: “The Government’s protection for high street tenants unable to pay rent is ultimately about the immediate protection of jobs, and businesses. As we approach next week’s Quarter Day it is a sensible reiteration of the obligations between landlord and tenant, including that those who can pay, should be paying. In most cases this has occurred and last quarter both parties maintained a sympathetic approach to one another’s business.
“We’ve found that the landlords who have kept an open dialogue with their tenants and behaved fairly at this time have been able to collect more rent than those that have taken a more aggressive stance.”
