@pizza set to expand with ‘UK’s first freshly cooked pizza drive-thru’ in seven UK retail park locations

Colliers International’s Licensed & Leisure team has been instructed by restaurant brand @pizza to identify seven shipping container sites for its new drive-thru concept, which it plans to roll out in retail park locations initially in Birmingham and Edinburgh/Glasgow.


The venture will be ‘the UK’s first freshly cooked pizza drive-thru’, according to @pizza, which is rated number one pizza restaurant on Trip Advisor in Birmingham and Edinburgh, where it currently trades from sites in Grand Central, Birmingham and Charlotte Lane in Edinburgh city centre. The new concept enables @pizza to open new sites for its eat-in, takeaway, home delivery and now drive-thru offering whilst providing a safe environment for both customers and employees during the COVID-19 pandemic. The shipping containers will occupy spaces of 22-30 sq metres.

The drive-thru’s will be able to make up to 10 perfectly cooked pizzas per minute via high tech conveyor ovens (150 per cent higher capacity than the traditional wood fired oven method), using the finest, provenanced ingredients which customers have unlimited choice to customise, all for a maximum price of £10.95. The pizzas are healthy, calorie counted, low sugar and carb, have gluten-free options and there are 858 vegan combinations to choose from.

Tom Beaumont, associate director, Licensed and Leisure at Colliers International commented: “The shipping container drive-thru units are set to be situated in car parks, taking up the size of roughly five to seven vehicle spaces. Customers will be able to order via an app with the option of collection or delivery to their vehicle.

 

“The cost of opening is circa £120k per site, compared with £650k+ for a restaurant so this is a particularly attractive option for restaurant brands as a way to move forward and attract new customers nationwide during the current pandemic.”

 

Bhasker Dhir, COO and co-founder at @pizza added: “These drive-thrus will bring quality and speed together as one, offering everything anyone could want from somewhere serving pizza, 24 hours a day, whatever the occasion, whatever your age and whatever combination of toppings floats your boat. Our menu offers real value for money with 64,000 possible combinations of sweet and savoury ingredients for a maximum price of £10.95. Last year, customers waited an average of 255 seconds in a drive-thru lane (Forbes) with MacDonalds being the longest at 273 seconds (QSRMagazine.com). With a 90 second cook time and an ability to cook 10 pizzas per minute @pizza can perform well within those averages. Even before the COVID pandemic hit, between 60% – 70% of some certain quick serve restaurant’s sales came from drive thru lanes.
