New director leads risk management at Colliers International

Chartered surveyor Ian Hardman brings 20 years’ experience to the team


Chartered surveyor and stalwart valuations expert, Ian Hardman, has been appointed as the new head of risk management at Colliers International.

He joined Colliers this month taking the position previously held by Sara Duncan, who has been leading the UK Valuation & Advisory team at the global real estate firm since the beginning of the year.

Ian has more than two decades of experience having previously worked for advisors Savills, JLL, and CBRE Finance. He has also worked directly in the real estate lending sector in risk and underwriting roles for major European banks. 

Sara Duncan, Head of Valuation & Advisory commented: “Ian has a wealth of knowledge of the sector which will be of great benefit to the team. His experience both in-house with banks and property advisory services means he’s well versed to advise on valuation, investment and loan security risk. We look forward to introducing him to our clients’ and sharing his expert knowledge within the team.”

With his strong track record in real estate valuations, loan security risk analysis and underwriting across all UK property sectors, Ian will be leading on the company’s risk management function and will be working closely with the commercial, portfolio, specialist and residential valuations teams in order to assist them in providing the best service to our clients having regard to current legislation and professional standards.

Sara has experience in both client-side and advisory businesses, with a background in valuations, real estate finance, investment strategy, development, asset managment and transactions management.  

Prior to joining Colliers in 2016, Sara led the EMEA Credit Risk Review function at GE Capital's €12bn Real Estate business.  Sara’s real estate career began at  DTZ, where she held roles within the Agency, Development, Valuations and Corporate Finance teams. 

Sara has lived and worked in continental Europe and has expertise across all asset classes in European markets.   Shis is a Felllow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS) and a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).  Sara is a member of the Colliers EMEA ESG SteerCo and a member of the CIVAS Global Valuation  Board.

I'm a communications professional who has previously worked as a journalist for eight years covering a broad range of topics including politics, crime, health and housing in north London. In recent years I have worked in corporate communications for local authorities across London  and joined Colliers in October 2019, initially providing maternity leave cover.

I provide strategic public relations advice to various business lines within the UK organisation to secure recognition for their work in the property press as well as key target media, and work with our experts to produce thought leadership pieces which are of interest to our clients and colleagues within the commercial real estate sector. In addition, alongside colleagues in the PR and wider communications team, I provide media and social media training for our in-house experts to prepare them for media opportunities and raise their personal brand within the sector.

As well as supporting various teams within the UK business, I also I curate and edit regular content for the Colliers.com blog, which drives credible business leads to our experts.
