Shieldhill Castle Hotel, Quothquan – SOLD

The historic Shieldhill Castle Hotel, where, where Nelson Mandela once stayed in 1997 while in Scotland for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting, has been sold by the Scottish hotels team of global real estate advisor, Colliers International.

The property, which dates back to 1199, based in Quothquan, Biggar, Lanarkshire, has been sold following a period of closure/ceased trading and has been acquired in a joint venture between south east England investors and a local buyer with South Lanarkshire connections. The purchasers’ plan to re-open Shieldhill Castle Hotel as soon as possible, to operate in 2020 principally as an events venue. Following a significant refurbishment, at a later stage, they plan to market the castle as a high-quality country house hotel leisure destination.

The property is a rare piece of Scottish history, which has stood overlooking the Clyde Valley and the Lanarkshire hills for over 800 years. Shieldhill Castle has a total of 30 bedrooms (16 in the main castle; 10 in the stable annexe; four in chalet lodges) and there is an excellent range of attractive public rooms and included is a three - bedroom private house and approximately 6.5 acres of private grounds.

The castle’s 18th and 19th Century additions to the main property predominate. The house has been occupied since 1560, mainly by the Chancellor family who sold Shieldhill in 1959 when it was converted to hotel use.

Its convenience of accessibility to both Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as the central belt, coupled with its tranquil rural location, make it an excellent spot to develop a leisure destination, whether for private, exclusive or corporate event use.”

The purchase price of Shieldhill Castle was undisclosed but Colliers International confirmed it was close to the asking price of £750,000.
