Property News Colliers & The Retail Group instructed on major Redcar & Cleveland study

Redcar & Cleveland Council

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council has instructed Colliers International’s research and consultancy team and The Retail Group to conduct a study into the retail, leisure and office sectors in the area.

The study will not only inform the new Local Development Framework (LDF) but it also aims to link into on-going work into the regeneration of Redcar and other centres in the borough.  Its purpose is to give the Council a comprehensive understanding of the key issues surrounding the retail and leisure provision, as well as the offices market, within the borough.

In particular, the study will involve:

  • Carrying out an audit of existing centres
  • Undertaking a telephone survey of households
  • Determining current shopping and leisure trip patterns
  • Identifying any deficiencies in existing retail, leisure and office provision
  • Assessing the need for additional retail floorspace, and leisure and office development through to 2026
  • Providing robust evidence to inform the LDF strategy and policy direction.

Councillor Mary Lanigan, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Transportation and Planning, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council said: “We must ensure that the shopping and leisure facilities in the borough meet the needs of our residents, workers and visitors. This study will be essential in helping us understand the borough’s requirements and making sure that our future planning policies and decisions are based on the most up-to-date information possible.”

Dr. Richard Doidge, Head of Research Consultancy, Colliers International commented: “We are extremely pleased to have been awarded the instruction for this important study. We recognise that although much has already been done to improve the attractiveness of Redcar and other centres in the borough, there is still a long way to go. We hope our work will assist in the on-going regeneration of the local area and help restore Redcar to its previous role as a successful shopping and employment centre, and tourist town.”

Mike Evans, MD of The Retail Group also commented: “We are delighted to be working with Colliers International on this project. We have spent the past year developing the bespoke future Retail Strategy for Redcar town centre and its customer base. The growing number of resident and visitor shoppers offers a tremendous future for the town. We can now help to provide a robust research base to inform the on-going policy framework.”
