Radar | East China | Smart campus development to transform business park market
Insights & Recommendations
Mobile internet and other cutting edge technologies are forcing businesses to reexamine traditional business logic, which is breeding new opportunities to upgrade business parks. Traditional business parks offer a unique combination of clear physical boundaries and clear ownership with which to roll out smart city strategies. But these modern, smart campuses should not only promote improved operations and governance, but also promote the development of smart cities through the sharing of data and information.
Smart campus development is still at the initial stage, with standards still being promulgated. Pilot projects are being launched, but there are still many concerns to be addressed. We hereby suggest the following recommendations:
• Smart campus development platforms, often conglomerates with real estate development expertise, should establish at the outset, working groups to coordinate the stakeholders including planning, design, technical consulting, real estate consulting, and smart system & equipment suppliers. This should improve efficiency and prevent communications difficulties and later operational obstacles.
• Smart campuses benefit from top down design, where the whole process of project planning, construction and operations management is unified. This should avoid problems such as fragmentation, information silos and duplication of smart applications which would hinder progress towards the ultimate goal.
