All cities are facing similar challenges when it comes to their environmental footprint, climate change and related pollution issues. This is due to the likely overpopulation of urban areas in the coming decades; space in cities is limited, leading to higher density and to a significant increase in demand for housing, services, healthcare and mobility.
From one perspective, cities have a better ecological profile than non-urban areas due to their lower per-capita emissions, but conversely they create challenges such as concentrated pollution and stress on local resources, such as water and electricity. Social segregation is one consequence of this density, if authorities do not upgrade their current processes and systems. A start would be to use available space inside cities to profit from their density and dynamism by fostering innovation hubs.
