Marsh goes hybrid

Since March 2015, the international insurance brokerage group Marsh & McLennan Companies occupies the Veridis building, located in Auderghem, Brussels. This 5-storey office building houses the various subsidiaries of the group: Marsh, Guy Carpenter and Mercer.

At the end of 2020, Marsh called on Colliers Belgium to help it implement a new work organisation and change the current work environment to be more in line with the new hybrid ways of working. The idea was to create a modern and innovative environment that boosts creativity and where employees could grow and pursue opportunities. In the process, the other two subsidiaries located in the building, Guy Carpenter and Mercer, also joined the exercise.

The challenge for this large-scale project? Reconciling the needs and ways of working of the three organisations and their employees, while also implementing a new Hybrid Way of Working (HWOW) environment in the existing offices, keeping structural changes and costs to a minimum.

The analysis phase began in December 2020, with interviews of the different stakeholders in order to define the vision and the concept, followed by the calculation of the sharing ratio and the development of a programme of requirements.

The primary function of this new flexible working environment will no longer be to support individual work, but rather to offer a multi-purpose space where employees have a multitude of options to meet, collaborate, concentrate,... As the number of workstations decreases, new workplace typologies are being integrated, such as phone booths, cockpits, quiet zones, co-creation rooms, etc., all of which are available to employees, to be chosen according to the task to be performed or their personal preferences.

As these organisational changes required physical modifications of the working environment, the Colliers Belgium teams then turned their attention to the development of new layout plans and of a new look & feel during the design phase. At the end of June 2021, the works and furniture were ordered in order to start the works in September, for a return to brand new offices at the beginning of 2022.

But Colliers Belgium's support does not stop there. In the coming months, our Change Management team will continue to elaborate and support Marsh's change management project, with the aim of helping Marsh & McLennan Companies' employees to become familiar with the new hybrid work organisation and their new flexible working environment.
