My retail brokerage practice specializes in retail corporate real estate, tenant representation, landlord representation, land acquisition and development services.  Because my professional experience is a mix of both brokerage and corporate management, I am able to offer my retail and investor clients a breadth of insight, expertise, and deal experience that involves all sides of the retail commercial real estate business.  While my market experience runs deepest in Northern California, with a specialty in the Oakland market, I also have relationships and extensive deal experience in most of the major US markets, as well as Japan, Brazil and Australia.

My roots in retail date back to childhood and my family’s successful high-end home goods retail store HomeChef first located in San Francisco’s prestigious Laurel Village.  After earning a BS in hotel/food/beverage administration, I joined the family company in operations and new store development, and subsequently grew the business to nine sites throughout California. 

In 1998 I was hired by the guru of retail tenant representation, Michael Epsteen, who taught me all about trade areas and to think like a retailer.  Michael’s Northern California business was absorbed by Terranomics, the nationally-renowned boutique retail real estate firm, and for eight years I represented many national tenants such as CVS, McDonalds, Supercuts, GNC, and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.  Some of my landlord clients included Safeway’s Property Development Associates, Sywest Properties, and Kin Properties.

Mervyns Department Stores hired me as their Director of Real Estate in 2005 where in three years I handled 26 deals for mostly ground-up 80,000 square foot ground leases.  In 2007, I shifted my relationship with Mervyn’s to work on retainer as their 3rd party Director of Real Estate, and started at Colliers International in Walnut Creek.  I moved to the Colliers Oakland office in 2010. 

Since joining Colliers I have been engaged by Hobby Lobby as their exclusive tenant rep in California, and to date they have opened over 40 stores averaging 55,000 square feet.  I was retained by children’s clothing retailer Sprockets as 3rd party Real Estate Director, where I completed 15 deals in outlet malls across the country.  I was also retained by Oakley as International Director of Real Estate focusing on Brazil, Japan, Australia and Hong Kong, and completed about 20 deals for them.

Subsequently, in 2016 I was retained as National Real Estate Director by Dixon Car Phone, the $9 billion British multinational electrical and telecommunications retailer.  The project involved rolling out Sprint Stores across the US.  In addition, since joining the Oakland Colliers office I have developed an urban retail leasing team focused on Oakland retail, and have had numerous Oakland listings and tenant representation assignments.

Professionally, I am very active in ICSC, and from 2004 to 2012 served on ICSC’s Northern California Program Committee.  I served for eight years on Colliers Retail National Leadership Committee, and as three-year Chair led the national directive to strengthen the Colliers national retail brokerage network and drive business development.  I am proud to be the only retail broker to have ever won the Colliers Chairman’s Award twice--in 2011 and 2015.  In 2012, I received the Colliers Everest Award.

As a volunteer, I have served as board member for the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce ($1million/year annual budget), and was honored as Volunteer of the Year for my work initiating the Oakland Land Use Committee, an advocacy group of commercial development professionals.  I currently serve as board member for the Oakland Builders Alliance (OBA), an advocacy organization of Oakland builders and developers supporting responsible and efficient growth.  I am chairman of its Land Use Committee, and in 2017 I chaired the OBA fundraiser that made a significant donation to the East Oakland Boxing Association, an organization dedicated to serving under-privileged youth with education, wellness and positive influence.

My amazing wife Setsuko and I live in Clayton with our beautiful, intelligent daughters Iris and Rose, who we adopted as infants from Kazakhstan in 2004.  In my spare time, I love to cook and walk our 4 dogs.  I have a deep passion for daily exercise, wine, scotch and poker (note: not necessarily in that order.)  I volunteer for my children’s schools and sports teams, and support several charities that benefit children.

In Scrabble, the more valuable the tiles you have on your tray the higher the score you are able to get when you spell out your words.  I see the breadth and depth of my 25-years’ experience as delivering real value to my clients when it comes time to “spell out” the most profitable deals possible for them.  The over-arching principle of my entire career is to deliver the best work I possibly can on behalf of my clients, Colliers International, and my colleagues--in that order.  I choose my business carefully with that principle in mind, and so far have been very fortunate in the professional satisfaction and success I have enjoyed.
