NOBU restaurant | Washington, DC


Challenge

Nobu, the worlds most recognized Japanese Restaurant, set its sight on opening their first DC location. With his close relationship with a friend of the Nobu owners, Jarrett Morrell was chosen to represent the renowned brand in sourcing a site.

The first challenge was finding a suitable neighborhood for the upscale restaurant. The principal owners did not have a preference and wanted to look at sites across the District. The second challenge was finding a space that could fit 11,600 SF on one floor. This criterion minimized the amount of plausible spaces drastically. 

The strategy

With his primary business line focus in office, Jarrett reached out to retail brokers in the DC market for guidance throughout the site selection process. He came across 2501 M Street in DC’s West End. The property was converting from an office building to mixed-use with condominiums and retail space.

The property owner was looking for a strong retail brand that would draw attention to the property. Jarrett presented this building to Nobu’s principal owners and was met with a receptive response. 

The results

Nobu signed a 20-year lease in 2015 with a plan to open in the first quarter of 2017. After the lease was signed, Jarrett continued to provide his services in researching valet service providers and helping the restaurant secure their liquor license.

The transaction went on to be recognized as one of Washington Business Journal’s Top 25 deals in Washington, DC for 2015. Jarrett was on hand to accept the prestigious honor.
