Challenge

For the relocation of Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) from its long time location at 2100 L Street, NW, continuing to accommodate dogs in the workplace was a top priority. The HSUS had previously owned its building, but after selling it and then beginning to seek a new space, it was critical for the organization to find a landlord that would accommodate dogs in a multi-tenanted building. Landlords who might be willing to accommodate dogs often have breed restrictions, which The HSUS opposes as discriminatory.

Strategy

Find a property and landlord that would accommodate pets, regardless of breed. Negotiated new policies to create safe, healthy workplace in multi-tenanted building for canines and people. To develop these policies required months of negotiation and back and forth with the owners and the tenant. 

Results

Carr Properties was not only willing to work with the HSUS on creating a policy that would overcome those challenges, but will also extend the new dogs in the workplace policy to its other tenants, expanding the reach of this program to help pets. The new location features expanded dog policies and facilities that include state-of-the-art air filtration systems to protect workers who may have allergies, and specially designed cubicles with pet gates so that dogs can be kept close to their human partners. 

The HSUS published a manual called “Dogs at Work: A Practical Guide to Creating Dog-Friendly Workplaces” and encourages businesses to adopt these policies as a benefit for their workforce and to boost employee morale and retention. In addition to working with corporations, the HSUS has also launched a “Pets Are Welcome” campaign, urging landlords and apartment building managers to welcome renters with pets and create responsible plans that do not discriminate based on breed or size of the animal.
