About Colliers | Richmond & Norfolk

Colliers is one of Virginia’s largest full service, exclusively commercial real estate firms. Founded in 1910 under the name Harrison & Bates, Incorporated, Colliers has experienced a long history of integrity and innovation. Over these years the company has distinguished itself in the areas of property management, development, sales and leasing of commercial properties.

Harrison & Bates was organized in 1910 by the consolidation of the firms of Harrison Realty and John W. Bates Real Estate. In 1938 John W. Bates, Jr., was made a partner of the firm. After the death of Mr. Bates, Sr., R. R. Harrison, Jr., became a partner in the firm; and in 1955, the partnership was incorporated with John W. Bates, Jr., as President and R. R. Harrison, Jr., as Executive Vice President. Mr. Harrison retired from active participation in 1970 but continued as Honorary Chairman of the Board until his death in 1998. In mid 1990, Harrison & Bates merged with the commercial division of Bowers, Nelms & Fonville, forming one of the largest full service commercial firms in Virginia. In 2012 Harrison & Bates became affiliated with Colliers International becoming known as Colliers International | Richmond an independently owned and operated entity. In 2014, a second office was opened in Norfolk, Virginia, Colliers International | Norfolk.

Although the firm is no longer directly involved in development, for many years Harrison & Bates was a leader in development activities in the City of Richmond. This firm was the moving force behind the development of the first regional shopping center in the area, Willow Lawn Shopping Center; was the agent/developer of Azalea Mall, another regional shopping facility and the area’s first enclosed mall; and H&B thereafter developed 12 additional shopping centers.
Harrison & Bates was instrumental in the establishment of the office park facilities along the Belt Line Railroad, where the home offices of Home Beneficial Life Insurance and Universal Leaf Tobacco Company are now located; was responsible for the development of approximately 46 office buildings in the western section of the city and of Richmond Plaza and the Ross Building downtown. In addition to the Richmond Plaza, other downtown properties represented by the firm include the Ironfronts Building, Mutual Building, Plantation House, Main Street Centre, Crestar Headquarters Building, Federal Reserve Building, FNB Building, Ross Building, 411 E. Franklin Street and Chesterman Place.
