New York, March 2, 2017 – In recognition of his leadership in the commercial real estate industry, success on behalf of clients, and commitment to philanthropy and the College, Columbia College recently name Colliers International Vice Chairman Joseph Cabrera as one of its 2017 John Jay Award honorees. Mr. Cabrera accepted the award at a ceremony held last night at Cipriani’s Midtown Manhattan location. Additional honorees included David B. Barry, President, Ironstate Development Co.; Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Former President, Republic of Estonia; Jenji Kohan, Executive Producer and Screenwriter; and William A. von Mueffling, President and CEO, Cantillon Capital Management.

Given annually, the John Jay Awards celebrate the distinguished professional achievements of alumni of Columbia College. Funds raised at the awards dinner go to the John Jay National Scholars Program, which provides financial aid to talented students. Mr. Cabrera, who graduated from Columbia College in 1982, is the quintessential embodiment of the philosophy behind the John Jay Award, given the impressive combination of his innovative work in the commercial real estate arena and devotion to giving back.

On the business side, he has helped structure and negotiate more than 3,000 real estate transactions totaling 40 million square feet in 250 cities worldwide, primarily for Fortune 500 companies including Thomson Reuters, Skanska, KPMG, CitiGroup, FactSet, IBM and JPMorgan Chase. For his efforts on behalf of these and other clients over his 30-year career, Mr. Cabrera won both the Real Estate Board of New York’s Robert T. Lawrence Memorial Award for the Most Ingenious Deal of the Year and the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties’ Deal of the Year. He has achieved top brokerage professional status at both Colliers and previous firms, and held leadership positions, including his present role as Chairman of Colliers’ Occupier Advisors group, where he has helped develop a global network of tenant-focused professionals.

Mr. Cabrera also commits much of his time to charitable causes and Columbia alumni activities. He is vice chair of the United Way of New York City’s Board of Director and chairs its Nominating Committee, is vice chair of its Resource Development Committee, and is co-chair of the Gridiron Gala, the organization’s signature fundraising event. Mr. Cabrera is a board member of Community Centers, Inc. of Greenwich, New Jersey Community Development Corp, and the Greenwich High School Sports Foundation. He is also a chair of the March of Dimes’ Joe Namath Celebrity Golf Classic. For Columbia College, Mr. Cabrera has been on the Board of Visitors and mentored young athletes — a position for which he was well prepared given his days as an All-Ivy running back. Mr. Cabrera is also co-chair of his 35th reunion after earning the President’s Cup for service at his 25th reunion.

According to Joseph Harbert, President of Colliers’ Eastern Region, “Joe Cabrera is one of the most distinguished and active dealmakers in our industry, and a tremendous asset to our regional, national and global practice. He works tirelessly to help clients grow their business and is a critical part of the Colliers story in New York and across the company.”
