NASHVILLE (January 9, 2014) – From October 2012 to October 2013, Terry E. Smith SIOR CCIM, Colliers Executive Vice President and Partner, spent much of his time working for the professional organization SIOR (Society of Industrial and Office Realtors) as the global president.
As he wraps his term up, Smith has taken the time to reflect on the position and where it's taken him, literally. Since starting his term, the post has taken him to London four times, in addition to trips to Brussels, Paris and Cannes, France. And then there was Toronto, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Houston, to name a few more.
Smith talked recently about his memories of that year: the time he brought his family to London, and the relationships he developed both personally and professionally. He talked about the name recognition that Nashville has worldwide, boosted by the TV show of the same name.
Smith led an organization with more than 3,000 members, mostly in the United States, but also scattered around the world. Members must be in the commercial real estate business for five years, do enough sales volume and be voted in by their peers. About 30 members are in Nashville and about 90 in Tennessee, Smith said.
"The network is a network that is really based more on relationships than business," he said. "I truly have friends all over the world that basically I can pick up on the phone and call with a lead where I'm going to send them a client that I work with, and they're going to take real good care of that client."
Smith also acted as an ambassador for Nashville, fielding questions about his town. "I think there's a lot of opportunity there."
Back in Nashville, Smith is now preparing for the SIOR world to come to him. The organization will hold its world conference here this October at the Omni Hotel, bringing more than 1,000 real estate professionals to Music City.
"The city couldn't buy that kind of advertisement," Smith said. "It's going to be pretty amazing."
