OFFICE-USING EMPLOYMENT

  • The greater Boston metro has posted a net gain of 32,600 office-using jobs since January 2008, which marked the beginning of the "Great Recession."
  • As depicted in the chart below, the Computer Systems Design sector accounts for more than half these jobs, with Information and Scientific R&D also posting strong gains.
  • Even though employment levels in downtown mainstays – Finance and Legal – are below pre-recession levels and firms continue to look for efficiencies, leasing from these companies accounted for more than one-third of the nearly 5 million square feet of transaction volume in Boston during 2014.
