MASSACHUSETTS INNOVATION ECONOMY – 2015 PATENT DATA IN REVIEW

  • Patent statistics are indicative of the health of an area’s innovation economy, and in 2015 Massachusetts posted a modest increase in the number of patents granted.
  • Last year 7,234 patents were issued to applicants in MA compared to 7,079 patents in 2014, representing a 2.2% increase. Since 2011, the number of patents granted to applicants in MA has increased by 30.9%.
  • A majority of patents issued in MA are ‘utility’ patents, which are “issued for the invention of a new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter…” (USPTO). The strength in number of utility patents issued in MA speaks to the strength of the state’s life science and technology sectors and is depicted in the chart below.
