Property News Chester Zoo ‘Islands’ project

Chester Zoo

The Destination Consulting team of Colliers International continues its long association with Chester Zoo, the UK’s most popular zoo. Led by Sean Young, the team has been advising the directors of the zoo on various elements of its major re-development scheme.

The £30m ‘Islands’ project is the first phase in this major re-development and will begin construction next year. It will showcase the zoo’s conservation fieldwork and bring together a range of animals from the islands of the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Bali, Sumatra, Sumba and Sulawesi to the heart of Cheshire. Visitors will travel through the islands by boat or on foot and will navigate mangroves, swamps, bamboo and tropical forests. Islands will also include a major new Indonesian tropical house which will be the largest indoor zoo exhibit in the UK and home to orang-utans.

This spectacular development will put the zoo amongst some of the best in the world. Colliers International has been developing the business model and investment case in order for the trustees of the zoo to make decisions on the best funding strategy. Colliers is now working with the zoo to develop a future pricing and ticketing strategy.

In addition, Colliers International has recently worked with the directors of the zoo to develop a new business plan for Oakfield House which is used to host events, functions and weddings. The house will close for a major refurbishment and when complete, will be positioned as one of Cheshire’s premier functions venues.
