Four directors from Colliers International have raised over £2,000 for Macmillan Nurses, Mountain Rescue and The Great North Air Ambulance after completing one of the hardest one-day cycling events in the UK; The Fred Whitton Challenge.
James Watson, James Findlater, (Retail Capital Markets) David Fox (Retail Agency) and Toby Nicholson (PRS) cycled a 180 kilometre route with 4,000 vertical metres of climbing, including ascents with gradients of 25-30%.
The team set off from Grasmere Recreational Fields, Lake District, at 6am on Saturday 06 May (2017) and returned, very tired, nine hours later.
James Watson commented: “All of us are keen cyclists and were keen to have a go at ‘The Fred’ and having completed it, I would say it deserves its reputation. By the end of the day we had nothing left in the tank, but were able to see the Lake District in all its glory as we ticked off a number of classic climbs, including Hardknott, Wrynose, Whinlatter and Honister. The food stations were a stand out – traditional northern fodder of cheese & jam sandwiches and Eccles cakes kept us going until the finish where we were rewarded with a finishers meal of meat pie & mushy peas.
“Overall, we’ve managed to raise over £2,000 for Macmillan Nurses, Mountain Rescue and the Great North Air Ambulance due in no small part to the generosity of family, friends and Colliers International to whom we are all extremely grateful.”
