Colliers International’s Birmingham National Offices Director, Matt Long has led the senior Counties squad to victory in his role as Manager of the England Counties Rugby Football team.
The 27-strong squad, led by Matt Long and his management team, have returned victorious from their two-match summer tour of Romania. Made up of players from ten counties across England, the squad came out on top in both fixtures, securing a 28-16 win against CSM Bucuresti on Friday 5th June, followed by an impressive 28-20 win at the national stadium against Romania A, to round off the tour on Tuesday evening.
The win against Romania A was cause for particularly celebration, as the team were up against a number of senior players, despite the game being billed as an U23s competition. Matt explained: “The match was originally billed as being against Romania A’s U23s, but in the end they only had four U23s players with the rest being made up by some fairly senior players who were typically physical. The result was a difficult one to predict because we had 15 debutants in the squad who were untested at this level. For a relatively inexperienced team to secure two wins, one of which was against a national side, was phenomenal and testament to the great work of the squad & coaches.”
Matt hung up his playing boots in May last year after a long career with Birmingham and Solihull RFC (the Bees). Prior to joining the Bees in 2003, Matt enjoyed distinguished spells at Newcastle Falcons and Bristol RFC as well as more than 100 career appearances for Moseley RFC.
David Smeeton, Head of the Birmingham office at Colliers International, added: “It is great to see Matt continuing to excel in his rugby career, after hanging up his boots last year. We’re very proud to have a veteran like Matt in the team, who is just as well respected in the property arena as he was on the playing field.”
