How We Started

Colliers International has evolved from enterprising, independent local business owners to an organization of 522 offices and 12,300 employees around the world with headquarters in Seattle, Washington.

In Portugal, Colliers started as a local brokerage company in 1989; today, we are an excellence driven company, with a locally unparalleled real estate service portfolio. Our client list is still growing on a yearly basis, nevertheless our clients of 15 years ago remain our clients today!

A Few Key Milestones

The Colliers brand begins

Our name originated in Australia, where Colliers International was founded through the collaboration of three property services firms in 1976. We are named in honor of Ronald Collier, who was a chartered surveyor and respected mentor to the founders, Robert McCuaig, Bill McHarg and George Duncan. This photo was taken in the late 1970s at our first national sales conference. Duncan, in the middle of the front row, wears a T-shirt with the proposed early Colliers International logo.

Leading the trend in global services

Colliers International joined forces with Macaulay Nicolls Maitland, leading the shift in our industry from regional real estate companies to global services organizations. This prompted MNM to change its name to Colliers Macaulay Nicolls and later to Colliers International. CEO John McLernon led the charge to form partnerships worldwide; Colliers is now in 522 offices in 62 countries.

Portugal operation begins

In 1992, Grupo IPG became Portugal's Colliers International partner. It is an association that has lasted for more than 20 years, now. At first, we had a small brokerage operation with a complementary advisory and consultancy service. We were, nonetheless, pioneers in a fast-growing country, helping to uncover some of real estate's secrecies.

Valuation Team

Our real estate services were being upgraded every year. In 1996, we officially created a Valuation Team. It did not take long to ascend to market leadership. Our Valuation Team is still regarded as one of the best in Portugal, working with all the major national and international banks, real estate funds and the most successful developers.

Porto Office

We opened our Porto office in 1998. We believed in Porto, back then, with a stagnant office market. Although the office market has not improved, we do not regret our decision. Our Valuation & Advisory Team, based in Porto, is second to none and highly regarded among clients and competitors. All of our staff has postgraduate studies and relevant real estate international experience.

Old Leadership, New Leadership

Joaquim had been with us when Colliers operations started in Portugal. The pursuit of different opportunities took him to another road. But, in 2003 the good son returned home. After a couple of years of a stagnant operation, soon the Valuation & Advisory department doubled the turnover and our real estate services began expanding.

A refreshed, powerful brand

The Colliers International brand is united, with all partner firms committed to working under a single brand name, mission and business principles. All offices are accountable to a clear corporate structure with six regional CEOs (in Asia, Australasia, Canada, EMEA, Latin America and the US).

Going South

Portugal have always had a close link with Angola. It was not hard to anticipate that the end the Angolan war would soon mark the economical flourishing of one of the richest countries in Africa. Nonetheless, in 2007, when we decided to open an office in Luanda, some called us crazy, then, but have joined us there, since. We did the first Luanda's Office Research report and, by now, we are market leaders in the valuation segment.
