Planning specialist Marcus Plaw said both district and borough councils were on the lookout for development sites as they consider future building strategies.
He said: “Both West Dorset and Weymouth & Portland councils have been consulting on their Joint Local Plan and landowners have got until April 3 to respond.
“Prospective developers holding land with or without planning permission are encouraged to make the councils aware of any site availability as the local authorities plan future growth patterns over the next 20 years.
“This presents an unmissable opportunity for land owners to start promoting land for housing and to highlight land with future development potential.”
Marcus concluded: “It is important to bear in mind that submission of a site does not necessarily mean it will be allocated for development.
“What it will do is help the council determine which sites are deliverable in the short term and help demonstrate a strong rolling supply of land for new homes and other development.”
