10.04.2011Advice from the Destination Consulting team has proved crucial in the rejection of planning permission to change art-deco supercinemas in Walthamstow and Islington into evangelical churches. David Geddes and Matt Hyslop advised Waltham Forest that the EMD Cinema, a prominent dis-used town centre building owned by the United Church of the Kingdom of God, could be a viable mixed performance venue and could stimulate successful regeneration for Walthamstow. Following our recommendation, local campaigners have formed a Trust with the aim of fund raising to purchase the building. The planning officer accepted our advice and, yesterday, Councillors unanimously supported the planning officers' recommendation to reject the application. Last month, David Geddes gave evidence as an expert business planning advisor to the London Borough of Islington at the Carlton Cinema Planning Inquiry, defending an appeal against non-determination by an evangelical church. Our advice centred around highlighting the failings in the proposed business plan for a conference centre supported by residential enabling development. The Council won comprehensively, including 100% award of costs.
