Thomas Backman has been in commercial real estate management since 1991 and brings a broad range of property management and asset management experience.  Prior to his entry into commercial real estate, Backman worked in a family business as a manufacturer’s representative for a line of construction products.

Mr. Backman has personally managed numerous notable assets in Hawaii, including:  Executive Center (a Honolulu 250,000+ sf high rise building consisting of a mixture of office, hotel and retail uses);  Koko Marina Shopping Center (a 280,000 foot shopping center located in East Honolulu that includes marina docking facilities);  Restaurant Row / Waterfront Plaza (a 500,000+ sf office building that includes 89,000 feet of ground floor retail);  Pacific Guardian Center (a 500,000+ sf office building located in Honolulu);  Harbor Court (a mixed use luxury residential / office high rise tower in Honolulu); Town Center of Mililani (a 450,000 sf shopping center located in Central Oahu).  Mr. Backman has also worked with numerous institutional clients such as TIAA-CREF, LaSalle Investments, Pacific Guardian Life, The Kojaian Group, ORIX Real Estate Equities and Douglas Emmett Properties.

In addition to property specific experience, Backman also supervised the property management division for Hawaiian Island Homes, administering to a 1,000 rental unit / mixed commercial property portfolio.  He also ran the property management division for The Weinberg Foundation in Hawaii, one of the largest owners of land and property in State that includes vacant land, industrial, residential, office and retail properties.

Born in Japan, Backman speaks conversational Japanese and has lived in Hawaii for most of his life.  He enjoys outdoor activities and spending time with family.
