There are 218 independent sector acute medical / surgical hospitals in the UK. The bed capacity is 9,463 which together with the 1,376 bed in 82 NHS Private Patient Units represents the total independent capacity in the acute sector. The total revenue generated by these facilities is estimated to be in excess of £3.5b funded predominantly by Private Medical Insurance (PMI) 65%; Self-Pay 25%; NHS commissions 7.5% and by overseas patients 2.5%. These revenues have doubled in the last 10 years as frustrations with the NHS continue.
