Economic Outlook for 2008, presented on February 5th
On Tuesday 5th February, Colliers CRE held its annual Economist Breakfast Briefing at the Wallace Collection with Anatole Kaletsky, the internationally renowned economist, as guest speaker.
Kaletsky spoke of the outlook for the US, Europe and the UK in the medium term. This is a summary of his presentation.
• The US is currently facing a mid-cycle slowdown rather than a full-blown recession.
• One way or another, the credit crunch is likely to end within the next month.
• The world economy has benefited from four ‘economic mega-trends’ in the past two decades.
• Slow responses to the slowdown by European and UK Governments and Central Banks pose a threat.
• The UK and Europe are vulnerable to a marked slowdown, which may be exacerbated by a US recession.
