Learning disability is normally defined as a significant impairment of intelligence and social functioning acquired before adulthood and it has been estimated that approximately 2% of the population (over one million people) can be described as having some form of learning difficulty. A learning difficulty is not an illness and cannot be cured.
The sector is currently one of dynamic change, influenced by Government initiatives including the White Paper ‘Valuing People’ and introduction of the Supporting People Grant. The sector offers a range of attractive opportunities for those operators possessing the necessary skills and expertise to deliver the required level of service.
