Going Green for Sustainability
For Immediate Release, 2008-07-22
by Doris Boo

Colliers International, Singapore

Colliers International launched r.e.Design, Asia’s FIRST green real estate guide in Singapore today. Targeted at members of the real estate industry – including developers, landlords and tenants, r.e.Design aims to provide simplification around the challenges industry players face in this rapid industry transformation to becoming more environmental friendly.  The guide also shares how they can then, leverage potential opportunities and manage risks as green buildings are fast becoming industry standard practice.

r.e.Design debuts in Singapore following successful launches recently held throughout Asia in India, Manila, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

“Colliers recognises and supports the acceleration of green real estate practices in Asia. The region is now at an exciting and critical juncture as it aims to maintain a balance between sustaining ecological systems and economic profitability. It is imperative for companies to gain better understanding of sustainable real estate practices in which they will benefit from a win-win situation. As such, r.e.Design is produced with the aim of providing industry players with real estate-centric knowledge on sustainability, as opposed to just building-centric,” said Mr Simon Carter, author of r.e.Design and Regional Head of Sustainability, Asia Pacific at Colliers International.

“We must think creatively in order to maintain the value of assets in a rapidly changing market. The real estate market will eventually reach a tipping point where green buildings will go from being optional and a point of differentiation, to become a standard practice,” added Mr Carter.

“We pride ourselves in providing a strong value proposition for our stakeholders and thus, decided to come up with this guide book to share our knowledge and to assist our clients in accelerating their success during this most important phase of evolution in buildings, real estate and our global society. In the near future, we would expect many of such properties to start being conceptualised in Singapore. Colliers will work closely with the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and other relevant authorities in promoting green real estate practices in the country,” said Mr Dennis Yeo, Managing Director of Colliers International Singapore and North Asia.

Sustainable ‘Green Real Estate’ is currently one of the fastest growing segments of the building industry in the US and this trend is also increasingly being recognised by stakeholders across Asia Pacific.

Singapore is no stranger in the area of green real estate practices. Under the BCA, an agency of the Singapore Government; the Green Mark scheme assesses real estate developments for environmental friendliness – including measures such as adoption of energy-efficient features and water conservation features – differentiating them from other buildings. Substantial use of greenery and good indoor environmental quality are also key criteria for assessment under the scheme.

r.e.Design
r.e.Design is a guide to real estate players for managing risks and leveraging opportunities associated with the changes experienced in real estate as our global and natural economies accelerate their pursuit of environmental sustainability. The acronym ‘r.e.’ stands for real estate. Together with ‘Design,’ r.e.Design references the way in which industry players now need to think about sustainability in real estate. Over-focus on cost and lack of comprehensive examination of the benefits of green development, particularly future-proofing against changing tenant demands, can result in loss of value.

r.e.Design is segmented into four different guides to cater to the different needs and sustainability objectives of different organisations. They are categorised as – Managing Green, Developing Green, Occupying Green and Living Green.
