Nike Inc.has announced plans to reduce its overall global work force 5 percent, or 1,750 of its nearly 35,000 employees.
500 of the job cuts will come from Nike’s world headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.
The company hasn’t determined how many jobs will be affected in Memphis, where Nike operates a distribution center that employs over 1,400 people.
Willie Gregory, director of U.S. Community Affairs for Nike in Memphis, said the company should make a decision by next week.
“We remain a growth company and we know these changes have created a stronger organization that will enable us to invest in our most significant opportunities,” Mark Parker president and CEO of Nike, said in a statement. “However, the decision to reduce our work force has been a difficult and challenging one as it affects our colleagues, teammates and friends.”
The company will be offering severance packages to displaced employees.
