The 4,530-square-mile Denver metropolitan area is located in the Mountain Time Zone and has historically consisted of six counties-Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson. A seventh county was added to the Denver metropolitan area on November 15, 2001 when the current City of Broomfield became its own city and county.
