Sofia, Bulgaria
Leading office complexes in Sofia will take part in the WWF Earth Hour initiative on March 29th from 8pm to 9pm. Among the parties supporting the global environmental event are Business Park Sofia, Bulgaria Center, Expo 2000, Landmark Center, Porsche Center and the international property consultancy, Colliers International, which has facilitated the initiative among their partners and colleagues. The campaign has also received the support of the international conference, BalRec, their real estate exhibition BalPex and leading media like Nova Televizia and Economedia.
The office complexes which will take part in the world initiative represent app. 30% of the total class A office space in Sofia. The lighting, which will be turned off in these facilities, includes exterior lighting, lights in common areas and signage. It will not impact the working of the tenants.
The WWF initiative, Earth Hour, took place for the first time on March 31st in Sydney, Australia where more than two million people and 2,100 companies switched off their lights for an hour. Many of the city symbols such as Harbor Bridge and the Opera were part of the initiative. This year more than 24 cities are partners of this initiative including Chicago, Copenhagen, Montreal, Tel Aviv and Bangkok, while another 100 cities support the event.
The symbolic turning off of lighting is a powerful way of increasing the awareness of global warming. Earth Hour aims at proving that everybody can be part of the change, and when these events are widely supported, the result is significant.
In 2007 the event provoked enormous interest, while this year it has already turned into a global campaign. The number of people and companies enrolled at the site www.earthhour.orgis growing continuously.
