For over thirty-four years, Charlie has been immersed in the practice of commercial real estate, for the first several years with Exxon Chemical and the El Paso Company and beginning in 1979 with Appelt, Robeau, Womack, Inc., the precursor to Colliers Appelt Womack, Inc. dba Colliers International in Houston. As Houston grew, he was able to develop and maintain working relations with many of Houston’s principal employers and individuals resulting in the growth of his firm and his own practice. Beginning with a focus on industrial real estate, he played a major role in the redevelopment of major land holdings on the Houston Ship Channel. As his client base grew, Charlie’s interests evolved into medical real estate including office leasing, land acquisition and general consulting. His practice now mirrors the needs of his clients as well as a significant involvement in investment real estate. Most recently, Charlie’s practice has extended worldwide as many of Houston’s multinational firms seek to locate facilities in other countries, most noteworthy being India and China.
Charlie earned a Bachelor in Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M University and his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Texas in Austin. After joining Colliers, Charlie became a primary partner in Colliers Appelt Womack in 1982 and moved to become its Chairman and now Co-Chairman of that firm. He also has served for four years as a member of the Board of Directors of Colliers USA. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Finance Committee for Colliers USA.
Charlie is Past President of the Houston Gulf Coast Chapter of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors and was honored as the Broker of the Year in 1995 by NAIOP. He has served as Chairman of the Houston Marketing Network of the Greater Houston Partnership. He was finalist for Houston’s Landmark Award for work on the redevelopment of the Cooper Cameron industrial complex for commercial and multifamily uses in 2003. He was awarded the Largest Land MCA for 2000 and the prestigious “Deal of the Year” in 2003 from Colliers International.
On the community front, Charlie was the former Chairman of the Board of the George Foundation and formerly served on the Board of Trustees of the Memorial Hermann Community Benefits Corporation and the Memorial Hermann Foundation. He is currently a member of the Investment Committee of the Greater Houston Community Foundation, as well as a member of Texas Children's Hospital West Campus Advisory Council. He is a founding member and sits on the Executive Council of Houston Wilderness, a member of the Regional Council for Parks and Green Space in Houston, and in 2008 accepted the role as Chairman of the Parent’s Fund for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Charlie is married to Carol Cody Herder. His daughter, Sarah, graduated from Duke University and received her Master’s from UCAL Santa Barbara. His son Charles recently graduated from MIT with a double major in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science and Physics, and is currently engaged.
